| IZZIE, KIA, HUNTER, WYATT & COLE These puppies are all purebred and from the same litter - their birthdate is 8-5-06 The puppies came from a commercial breeder and were bound for petstores to be sold. However they came down with upper respiratory infections and the petstore refused them and we were contacted to take them into rescue. There were originally 7 puppies but 2 died of the infection prior to their coming to us. The others seem to be doing pretty well although Hunter, who is the smallest boy, seems a bit lethargic so we will keep a close eye on him. They are all doing a little bit of coughing but eating, drinking and playing well. They will go to the vet on Monday for a checkup unless they seem to get sicker over the weekend in which case we will take them to the ER vet. They are all a bit shy and obviously have not been handled by people much but the tails are already wagging and tentative kisses being given. The girls are much more outgoing than the boys, and larger also. Izzie is obviously the alpha puppy in the litter and keeps all her brothers and sisters in line. She was the first one to venture out of the crate when it was opened out in the yard and had already explored most of it before the others had gotten up the nerve to leave the safety of the crates. Today they had their first chance at total freedom to run and play in the grass and leaves. They absolutely loved all the leaves and after deciding it was safe they were all racing around, sniffing and westling and burying themselves in them. The puppies are now 13 weeks old and cannot be spayed and neutered until 16 weeks of age assuming that they are deemed healthy enough. Should everything go as planned, they should be ready to go to forever homes near the end of December. In the meantime they will gets lots of love and attention and time to play outdoors so they will be better socialized by the time they leave. They are up to date on shots and located in the Kansas City, MO area The puppies have all been to see the vet and have been diagnosed with kennel cough. They are all on antibiotics twice a day for the next 2 weeks. You should see the size of the pill bottle! Wyatt and Hunter have the worst of it and are getting a cough suppressant as well. Other than the kennel cough they are all in pretty good health. They are a bit underweight - all weighing between 10-12 lbs. All had normal temps and their lungs, ears and eyes are clear which is all very good news. Several very old stitches were found in Kia's abdomen. Apparently she had a hernia repaired at some time and the stitches were never removed. We made a note in her chart to double check the repair when she is spayed to make sure it was done correctly. Thankfully they have been judged healthy enough to bathe now which they are sorely in need of! December Update The puppies are much better but not yet 100% - they will not be ready for adoption until after the first of the year January Update Kia is very ill - while the other puppies have gotten over the infection, Kia's has progressed into pneumonia. She is now with the vet getting treated. Please send your good thoughts and wishes her way. Jan 12 Kia is home after 5 days in the hospital and doing much better. She will be on antibiotics for the next 2 weeks and then will go in for another x-ray to see how her lungs are. Feb. 10, 2007 Kia is still fighting the pneumonia. She has been through weeks of trying different antibiotics without any real success. She is not getting any worse but also not getting better. Next Tuesday, Feb. 13th, she will be going in to have a procedure called a "tracheal wash" which will allow them to get samples of the infection in her lungs that will then be cultured to determine exactly what it is causing the pneumonia and what antibiotic or other treatment will be successful in battling the condition. |
