| HAZEL Hazel is a purebred Wheaten. She was 3 months old when she was first taken into rescue. She was born in a puppymill and taken to be sold in a petstore in New York. But, after her arrival, it was discovered that she had a problem dribbling urine. Without doing any tests at all, she was diagnosed as having a condition called 'etopic ureter' and was sent to a animal clinic with orders to put her to sleep. Thankfully for little Hazel, a worker at the clinic convinced her boss to give her time to find a home for Hazel and she contacted S'Wheat Rescues. Hazel is now in Kansas City with her new foster parents, Barb and Wayne who drove all the way to New Jersey to pick her up. She has been seen by a veterinarian and a very expensive surgery ($1500 +) will be required in order to give Hazel a fighting chance at a good quality of life. Many people have pledged donations to help pay for her surgery and more is needed. If you are interested in helping to fund the surgery that Hazel will need, please either click the link below and send your donation through PayPal or you can snail mail to the address below. Hazel is currently scheduled for Surgery on September 3, 2002. However, she does need to hit 20 lbs. prior to the surgery so the date may need to be rescheduled if she has not hit that targert. Please check back for a update on Hazel after that date. UPDATE - SEPTEMBER 4TH, 2002 We had a roller coaster of a ride yesterday with Hazel and her surgery. We had to wait several hours for the surgery to even begin as they had a difficult cancer surgery that took longer than expected. Finally a phone call came from the clinic after 3 pm and the news was anything but encouraging. They had gone in with the fiber optic camera and what they saw was not good, they thought there were major problems with the kidneys and bladder but asked for permission to do exploratory surgery while she was still under the anesthetic to see if anything could be done for her. We, of course, gave them the go ahead and asked that they do anything and everything that could be done for her. The vet said she would go in and see what she thought could be done and would call if it was hopeless and there was no quality of life to be expected. She promised to anything possible to help her. Needless to say, we were all very upset by the bad news we had just received. We all waited on pins and needles for another call from the vet. Minutes turned into hours (which seemed like days!) and more than 3 hours passed with no news. Finally a call from the vet and the news was much more encouraging. All this time Hazel had still been under the anesthetic and in surgery. What they found after going in was better than it looked with the fiber optic camera. Hazel's entire urinary system is under-developed. Her kidneys and bladder are small because they had been entirely bypassed and had not been used. Both of her ureters off the kidneys were etopic and had to be rerouted to the proper position as well as the connections to the kidneys and bladder. As you can imagine, this was MAJOR reconstructive surgery. The vet was very optimistic and encouraging after the surgery. Although major repairs were needed, she felt that if everything heals up and reconnects properly that the chances are good that there will be little to no urine leakage. What leakage there may be would hopefully be controllable with drugs. The kidneys and bladder, although small looked serviceable and the hope is that they will grow and develop as they begin to be used properly. They were able to spay her while she was in surgery so thankfully we will not have to put her through surgery again for that. As you can imagine, this is all going to cost much, much more than the $1500 we were originally budgeting for. Hazel will be in intensive care for at least 4 days at a cost of $300 per day. We have no idea how much more the surgery is going to be due to all the work that went into it and the time involved. We are so thankful for the people who have already donated to Hazel's surgery fund and to all those who have jumped in since the surgery yesterday and donated more money to cover they new costs. Barb and Wayne who have been Hazel's foster parents since she cam to Kansas City would like everyone to know they are totally committed to Hazel and to getting her well had giving her the best quality of life possible. No matter what the outcome of all of this they have already decided that they will be adopting Hazel and giving her a forever home. Your continued donations and support to Hazel's fund are much appreciated. Every dollar donated will help her get the normal, healthy, happy life she deserves. These new pictures were taken the day before Hazel's surgery. You can see how much she has grown in the 3 months since she came into rescue. UPDATE - SEPTEMBER 13, 2002 Hazel has now been officially adopted by Barbara and Wayne Pickwoad of Olathe, KS CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Hazel had a minor set-back after having been home from the hospital for a couple of days and had to be readmitted but she is now doing very well and is back home where she belongs. It will be some time before we know if the dribbling problem is 100% corrected but even if it is not we consider her surgery to be a SUCCESS! With the severe abnormalities she was born with, Hazel would not have been able to live very long - probably not more than a year. With the surgery the worst of it has been corrected and we are hopeful that she will have a long life. It goes without saying that we know she will have a wonderful life with her forever family. From myself, Barb and Wayne, and most especially Hazel - we all thank you for the enormous outpouring of love, prayers and generosity in our fight to give our sweet little Hazel a good quality of and long life. We simply would not have been able to do it without your help. THANK YOU TO ONE AND ALL OF HER ANGELS!! |
