JERSEY

Jersey is a purebred female Soft Coated
Wheaten Terrier. Her estimated DOB is
6/02

Jersey has a long story to tell - she has
not had a happy beginning but we will do
our best to give her a happy ending.

Jersey originally lived on a farm in rural
Kansas but she ran away along with one
of her puppies. Unfortunately the puppy
was hit and killed by a car. A family took
her in and intended to keep her but on
taking her to the vet found that she had
2 large lumps on her back and was
heartworm positive and the treatment
cost was too much for them so Jersey
ended up in a animal shelter. Her original
owner was contacted and did not come
and get her and Jersey ended up staying
at the shelter.  When the shelter became
too full it was decided that Jersey would
have to be put to sleep if a rescue could
not be found. We found out about her on
Friday night, after the shelter was
already closed for the night, and the
email we received said she was
scheduled to be euthanized on Monday
so we were pretty concerned. Thankfully
we were able to make contact with the
shelter workers and made arrangements
to bring Jersey into rescue.

The shelter was wonderful and even
donated the cost of her shots and
groomed her before we picked her up on
Saturday afternoon so she was pretty
and clean when we picked her up.

Jersey is absolutely beautiful and has a
gorgeous Irish coat as you can see in
her pictures and video. She is also very,
very sweet and gets along well with
other dogs. Her only 'fault' is that she
does not like cats.

She is very good with brushing and
grooming and even lets you mess with
her feet with no issues.

Jersey has an appointment at the vet
first thing Monday morning. With having
2 lumps and with being heartworm
positive, we will have to be very careful
in figuring out the best way to treat her
and in what order the treatments and
surgeries will have to be ordered to give
her the best chance at a good outcome.

At this point we are estimating in the
area of $1000 to get Jersey healthy but
will have a better idea after seeing the
vet.

Jersey could use some Wheaten Angels
to help her get the treatment she needs.

UPDATE

Jersey saw the vet today. The good news
is that he feels the lumps on her back
are just monstrous sebaceous cysts and
while they need to be removed
immediately due to their size and the
potential of rupturing, he does not feel
that they are cancerous. He was able to
aspirate the cysts and looked at the fluid
under a microscope and did not see
anything that indicates cancer

Tests were run to make as sure as
possible that Jersey's heart can handle
anesthesia and tomorrow the cysts will
be removed and she will be spayed.
After she has recovered from the
surgery we will treat the heartworms.

Waiting to do the surgeries until she has
been treated for the HWs is too risky as
if the cysts burst while she was being
treated she would not be able to be put
under anesthesia and the potential for
infection is very high should a cyst burst.
If we did the heartworm treatment first
we would have to wait 4-6 months for her
heart to heal in order to do the surgery
so we feel her best odds are to do the
surgery first.

UPDATE #2

Jersey's surgery went well today, both
lumps were removed and she was
spayed.  She did not have any problems
during the surgery. Barring any
complications overnight she will be
released from the vet tomorrow and will
be moving to her new foster home
where she can get some one and one
attention while she heals from this
surgery and again after the heartworm
treatment. We will update again
tomorrow night after she is released.

UPDATE #3

Jersey was released from the vet today.
Although she has large incisions she
already looks better than she did with
the huge lumps. She will be allowed to
heal until early July when she will be
treated for the heartworms. Todays bill
was just over $500 for the spay and the
removal of the two lumps. She has
moved to a new foster home where she
can get the one on one attention and
love that she has been missing in her
life. We will update again if anything
significant comes up and when she goes
in for heartwom treatment.  Jersey Girl is
quite the trooper and came out of the
vet today with her head and tail up and
wagging a mile a minute so we are sure
she will heal up quickly.

UPDATE #4

Jersey has now been treated for her
heartworms. Below is an update from her
foster mom:

Jersey is now home. I picked her up after
work yesterday. She is in very good
spirits and doesn't seem to adversely
affected by the Heartworm treatment.
She is moving a bit slower but that is
good. The Dr. told me things to watch for
and so far - everything looks good.  She
had a very restful night - I didn't hear her
once.

UPDATE #5

From her foster mom:
I took Jersey in for a two week check and
she checked out just fine. We talked
about next steps and timing and since  I
will be on vacation at the 1 month time
check he decided to recheck for the
"babies" in the blood stream right then.
She came out negative and I was given a
heartworm preventative pill (Interceptor)
to give her when I got home.  She had
no reaction to it and seems just fine.

I plan on taking her in the week I get
back for her next checkup when he will
recheck her for heartworm.  He said it
would be about 3 months total time
before he is comfortable saying she is
totally heartworm free.

Jersey  is spayed and up to date on
shots. She is located in the Kansas City,
KS area
