KIA

Kia is a purebred female Soft Coated
Wheaten Terrier. Her DOB is 8-5-06

She is one of a litter of 5 that came in
with upper respiratory infections. You

January Update

Kia is very ill - while the other puppies
have gotten over the infection, Kia's has
progressed into pneumonia. She is now
with the vet getting treated. Please send
your good thoughts and wishes her way.

Jan 12
Kia is home after 5 days in the hospital
and doing much better. She will be on
antibiotics for the next 2 weeks and then
will go in for another x-ray to see how
her lungs are.

Feb. 10, 2007

Kia is still fighting the pneumonia. She
has been through weeks of trying
different antibiotics without any real
success. She is not getting any worse
but also not getting better. Next
Tuesday, Feb. 13th, she will be going in
to have a procedure called a "tracheal
wash" which will allow them to get
samples of the infection in her lungs
that will then be cultured to determine
exactly what it is causing the pneumonia
and what antibiotic or other treatment
will be successful in battling the
condition.

Feb. 15, 2007

Kia came through the tracheal wash with
no problem and seemed to be fine but
early this morning she began vomiting
violently and was having a hard time
breathing. She was at the vet's office
when they opened.

They have her on oxygen and a
nebulizer and say she can come home
but to me she was not doing well at all
so she is staying at the vet for the night.

AM Update

Unfortunately I don't have good news. As
I said yesterday, I thought she was
sicker than what the vets thought. I am
very glad I went with my gut feeling
when they said she could come home
and I said I would rather leave her there
overnight. First thing this morning I got
a call saying she was having more
trouble breathing and violently throwing
up again.

They did a full blood panel and could not
find anything wrong in it. They then did a
set of full body x-rays and her heart,
kidneys, liver, etc. all look normal. Her
lungs are a different story. They look
much worse than they did just last Friday
when they x-rayed them.

They are a bit stumped on the violent
throwing up as they say that is not a
symptom of pneumonia but they cannot
find any other reason for her to be doing
this unless she has some sort of
obstruction.

We are still waiting the results from the
tracheal wash to find out what antibiotic
might work but at this point they are
saying her prognosis is "poor".

They have her on IVs for fluids,
antibiotics and anti-nausea drugs to try
and stop the throwing up. I have, of
course, told them to do anything and
everything they can for her regardless
of the cost.

PM Update

They have put Kia on a new antibiotic
called  Cephtazidime  which they hope
will help. She also coughed up a large
mass tonight which they looking at and
said was a mass of white blood cells
from her body fighting the infection.
They are continuing the nebulizer
treatments as well.

Feb. 17, 2007

Better news to report today! When I
called this morning to check on Kia I was
told she was back up on her feet, alert,
tail wagging and had attacked her
breakfast and ate it all. These are all
very good signs.

I went over to visit her this afternoon
and she wagged her tail and gave me
kisses, she was very happy when I took
her out of the cage but not so happy
when I put her back - I think she thought
I was taking her home.

She has lost more weight and is painfully
thin but hopefully the new antibiotic will
continue to work. Today they are saying
they are "very encouraged" by the
progress she has made.

Unless she gets worse and they call me
tomorrow there won't be anymore
updates until Monday. Please continue
to keep her in your thoughts.

Special thanks to those of you who have
jumped in to become Angels for Kia - it is
very much appreciated.

February 20, 2007

Kia continues to make small
improvements but is still in the hospital.
She decided she had had enough of the
IV's today and proceeded to chew
through them and pull them out. I guess
we should take it as a good sign that she
was feeling well enough to chew on
things.

The results came back from the test she
had last week and either something was
wrong with the sample or in the lab but
there were no results.

Today I went over and saw her and had
the vet take some swabs of her throat
which I took over to Topaz who is taking
it to her lab to do some further testing.

The vet felt her chest sounded better
today but we won't until we do another
x-ray later this week and see what it tells
us. She continues to get the nebulizer
treatments and they are going to go with
injectable antibiotics and see how she
does without the IVs as she is eating and
drinking ok now.

February 23, 2007

Kia came home tonight. She is feeling
better and breathing much easier. We
have gotten some results from her lab
tests but are waiting for the sensitivity
tests to be completed. For now she has
been put on chloramphenicol to see if
that will finish killing off the pneumonia.
She is still horribly thin so we will be
working on fattening her up as well

Please continue sending your good
thoughts her way!

Feb. 28 Update

Kia seems to be getting better, her
coughs are few and far between and are
sounding less congested but we won't
know for sure until another x-ray is
done. She is eating and drinking well
and on a short trip outside today was
interested in playing with her toys again.

We got the lab tests back from the 2nd
lab and finally got some helpful results,
we are hoping the antibiotic she is on
now will continue to work as our only
other option if it does not is Baytril and
Baytril is not recommended for dogs
under 1 year old as it can do some
damage to their bones. But if we have to
use it we will to save her life.

We got the bill for her last hospital stay
today - just a little under $1400. We are
well over $2000 in medical bills for Kia
so far with more to come so her Angels
are very much appreciated - THANK YOU

March 23 Update

WONDERFUL NEWS TO REPORT!!!

After more than a week of hearing no
coughing from Kia we took her in for a
follow-up x-ray to see where we were in
her treatment.

The x-rays showed that Kia's lungs are
95% free of any sign of the pneumonia
and the vet did not feel that any further
treatment was necessary - her body will
finish off clearing out the remaining
material in her lungs!

After months of fighting Kia has finally
turned the corner in her fight for life.
This puppy certainly has a strong will to
live!

After her last long hospital stay Kia's
coat was impossibly matted and we had
to make the decision to cut off all that
wonderful long puppy coat. It is always
so sad when it is time for that first
haircut! But, Kia seems to like her short
cut and is so happy to be able to stay
outside and play to her hearts content
with the other dogs after her long weeks
of having to stay quiet while being
treated for the pneumonia.

Kia is still too thin but is gaining weight.
She will need to gain several pounds
before she is healthy enough to be
spayed. Barring any further health
problems we are hopeful that she will be
ready to move on to a forever home by
the end of May or June.

Thank you again for all the wonderful
Angels who came forward and donated
to Kia's care. Your donations are what
allows us to help the dogs like Kia who
come in with expensive health problems
that need to be addressed.

June 2007 - A FOREVER HOME

Kia has been adopted by Kelly
Deare of Missouri

CONGRATULATIONS!
