CASH

Cash is a young male
Wheatable, most likely mixed
with bearded collie judging by
his body shape and coat, but at
40 lbs. too small to be
purebred. Probably around 2
years of age.

Cash was confiscated from a
home notorious for keeping
dogs for awhile and then
shooting them when they
became tired of them according
to the animal control officer.

As you can see in the pictures,
Cash's right front leg is bent at
the "wrist" and he is unable to
straighten it. He was seen by a
local vet who diagnosed him as
having a problem with the
tendons being too tight. He
wanted to amputate Cash's leg.

We are going to do everything
possible to avoid having that
happen, we will take him in to
see an specialist and see if the
leg can be repaired.

The people at animal control
raved about how sweet and
loving this guy is and how he is
a favorite of all there.

He is now UTD on shots and will
be neutered. He is located in
Clinton, IL

Feb. 26 Update

Cash has now been picked up
and is in Kansas City. He was
one stinky, dirty dog and his
beard was a mass of burrs with
lots of others all over his body.
As you can see - we about
destroyed the motel room
bathtub but he is clean now, lol.

Cash will go in to the vet this
week and we will update the
page with information after that
has happened.

February 27 Update

Cash has been to the vet and
unfortunately there is no hope
in saving the leg. He was hit by
a car a long time ago and his
nerves were damaged and he
never got any vet care. As a
result the leg is frozen in place
and all the muscles have
atrophied. He literally has no
muscle left in his shoulder -
there is only bone and he has
no feeling in the leg at all due
to the nerve damage.

Cash's leg will be amputated
this coming Wednesday. There
is no reason for him to
continue to drag around a
useless leg that is just dead
weight and it throws his
balance off by not being able to
use it. Dogs get along very well
with a missing leg and he will
be able to get around a lot
better when it is completely
gone. We will update the site
again after he is back from the
vet.

March 1 Update

Good news and bad on Cash
today. The good is he is fine
now and recovering. The bad,
he had a really hard time in
surgery and his blood pressure
dropped and heart rate went
way down and they had to bring
him out of the anesthesia
quickly. Thankfully they were
done with the amputation at
that point but were unable to
neuter him as his life was in
danger if he stayed under the
anesthesia any longer. After he
is healed and healthy from the
amputation we will reschedule
him for the neuter. The vet felt
his problems were probably
related to all the drugs he was
on due to the amputation and
those drugs will not be needed
for a simple neuter so hopefully
he will do ok with that. Cash will
be staying with the vet until
Saturday so he can be kept
quiet and start healing. We will
update again if his condition
changes or when he released.

Please keep your good
thoughts going for him! This
poor boy has had a hard time of
it and deserves an easy
recuperation.

March 2 Update

Cash is having a hard time in
recuperation. He is having
"phantom limb" pains and is
crying a lot. They are keeping
him sedated and giving him as
much pain medication as they
safely can.

March 3 Update

Cash is doing much better
today. The vet thinks the
morphine may have been
making him delirious yesterday
and that is why he was howling
and crying so much. They
weaned him off of it overnight
and today he ate and was
standing up. He still has a lot of
drainage from his surgery site
so the decision won't be made
until tomorrow morning if he
will come home on Saturday or
remain there until Monday

March 4 Update

Cash is holding his own and
still recuperating. The decision
was made to leave him at the
vet over the weekend as he is
not being a very good patient
and keeps figuring out ways to
chew through his IV or pull off
the bandages. He should come
home on Monday. The vets
office is closed tomorrow so
unless they call with a problem,
there will be no update until
Monday.

March 6 Update

Cash is now home! He was very
happy to be out of the hospital
and excited when he realized
he was back home, but was not
real thrilled when he found out
he could not run around the
house free for now. He still has
quite a bit of drainage coming
out of his surgery site but it
should clear up in a few days.
He is not too thrilled with the
e-collar - especially when it
keeps him from sniffing
everything he wants to sniff
outdoors. He is eating and
drinking well and should get
drastically better every day.
The new pics were taken this
evening. Cash's vet bill was
$972 for the surgery and he will
still need to be neutered after
he has recovered.

March 12 Update

Cash went to the vet on Friday
and there is some concern that
some tissue at the bottom of
his suture line may not be
healing properly and they may
need to go in and debride the
area. We will know more after
he sees the vet again on
Monday.

On the good side, Cash's spirits
are much better now that the
cone is off. He also made an
appearance at the Wheaten
Meetin' for a few minutes on
Friday which he enjoyed.

More info on Monday after the
vet visit.

March 14 Update

Today Cash went in to have his
wound debrided. Turned out
that it was mostly just a big
thick scab and not dead tissue.
But the slight infection was
being caused by the wound not
being able to drain properly so
they put in a drain that will stay
in for a week to keep the
wound dry while the healing
completes. The staples from
the wound were removed as it
is almost completely healed.
Thankfully Cash did not have
any problems while under the
anesthesia this time so they
went ahead and neutered him.
They also gave him a thorough
check while he was under and
discovered that 3 teeth, on the
same side as the bad leg, were
shattered and the roots were
exposed. This most likely
happened at the same time as
his leg was injured. The vet
removed the 3 teeth as the
roots being exposed is
extremely painful.

With the pain from the bad leg
and the shattered teeth it is a
miracle that Cash has retained
his happy and sweet
personality. The techs at the
vet commented on how happy
and friendly he was to all of
them even after what they had
put him through and he went
happily to the back wen I took
him in with the tail wagging.

Plans are that Cash will come
home on March 15 so watch for
another update after that.

March 15 Update

Cash came home today and
looks very good. He has a drain
in his shoulder that has to be
flushed out everyday and the
drain has to be moved and
massaged so that it does not
get stuck inside his shoulder
and can be removed easily.

One person after another came
up to me at the vets to say what
a special, sweet guy he was to
keep his friendly, outgoing,
personality after all they had
put him through. He  still had a
lick and a tail wag for everyone.
Cash goes back in for a
checkup next Monday so we
will update after that.

March 24 Update

Cash got to play today! And he
was one happy happy boy to be
able to go out with a few of his
buddies and work off some of
that pent up energy from
having to be crated while
recovering. You can see
pictures of the fun, by clicking
HERE.

Cash got a clean bill of health
at his vet checkup earlier this
week. His drain from the 2nd
surgery was removed and has
now healed over. Now that he
is able to play again he is a
happy boy.

He moves so much better now
without the dead leg hanging
there uselessly. He does not
lose his balance and fall over
the way he used to and as you
can see in the playing pictures,
he can run like the wind on his
3 legs and keeps up with the
other dogs just fine.

His fur is growing back in very
quickly  and he will be ready to
go to a forever home very soon!
