Hope

Hope is a approx. 5 year old purebred
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. She is
another girl in the long line of
puppymill dogs that have been coming
into rescue lately.

Details are sketchy but she was part of
a raid on a puppymill somewhere in
Kansas and ended up in a shelter
there she and Faith came in together.

Her front teeth are worn from chewing
on the bars of her cage in the mill. She
is suffering the effects of the spay and
probably coming down with kennel
cough from the shelter.

She is such a sweet, quiet girl. She
likes people and wants to lean up
against you and be petted.

At the vet yesterday we found she had
a severe ear infection in one ear - we
could not believe that the shelters
vet, who spayed them both, did not
clean the ear when she was under.
Our vet cleaned them as well as he
could without putting her under again.

Her teeth are a mess as well and she
will lose several but the vet wanted to
wait awhile since she was just under
anesthesia so we will wait a week or
so before going in to deep clean the
ear and take care of the teeth, she
also has a small growth on her neck
that needs to be removed.

We will get more pictures of Hope
when she is feeling better so please
check back.

April 15 Update

We got new pictures of Hope today
now that she is feeling better.  Hope is
SUCH a sweet, sweet girl. She loves
attention and
wants nothing
more than to be
right up against
you at all times.
She had a very
nasty case of
kennel cough on
top of her bad
teeth and ear
infection and lost
weight that she
could not afford
to lose. She is
eating again now
and as soon as
she is back to a
better weight she
will go in and have
her ears deep
cleaned, her teeth
taken care of and the
growth on her neck removed.

June 2006 - Hope's Surgery

Hope's surgery went well. She lost
several teeth and had the rest
cleaned. Her ears were deep cleaned
and a small growth on her neck was
removed. She is now gaining weight
back and doing well.

September 2006 Update

Hope has not been gaining weight as
we would like and still having trouble
with her ear infection.  A previous
mammary mass had been thought to
be an infection but after several
courses of antibiotics had failed to
clear it up the decision was made to
go in and surgically remove the mass.
During surgery the mass was found to
extend along the whole breast line
and therefore it was all removed. As
you can see in the new pics, it
resulted in a very large wound.

Unfortunately Hope pulled out a line of
sutures while still at the vets and had
to go back in for a second surgery the
next day.

The mass has been sent off for
analysis and we are still waiting for the
results and hoping it will prove to be
benign.

Hope is now recovering well from her
surgeries and feeling much friskier.

We will update the page after we get
the analysis results and after we get
new pictures after the cone has been
removed.

Jan 2007 Update

The analysis on Hope's mass did show
it was cancerous but the vets felt that
they had gotten it all and no further
treatment was needed.  It has been 5
months now and there has been no
reoccurance so at this time we feel
Hope is ready for a forever home!

From her foster mom:

Hope has been a wonderful girl. Even
the vet tech thought she was great
when she took Hope's stitches out
from the surgery. She and Kobi have
gotten along great - and if you
remember how "alpha" Kobi is, you will
probably be surprised to hear that
Kobi backs away from the water bowl,
bones or anything when Hope comes
for her "fair share". They have not
fought, but somehow it seems that she
has now become the "Alpha" now. She
is good when I give her a bath and
likes to be rubbed with a towel. I was
amazed at her shiney, curly coat when
I first saw it. She started out weighing
31 lbs. and now weighs 34-35 lbs. She
has learned "sit", "down", "come" and
we are working on "stay." She is a very
cuddly dog and likes to sit on my lap
and will stay for several hours. She
also want her "fair share" of petting,
attention and treats but in a very nice
way.

Her scar is hardly noticeable now. She
is a pretty mild-mannered dog in the
house. Outdoors, she can give Kobi
quite a work-out, playing and running
about. Sometimes, she grabs the hair
on his neck and holds on for dear life.
I love watching them play.
