Katie is an approximately 5-6 week old purebred
female Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. Katie came
from a puppymiller here in Missouri. We were told
she was 10 weeks of age and was rejected by the
brokers as too small to sell in a petstore. This story
did not make much sense and after we picked
Katie up it was quickly obvious that this puppy is at
least a month younger than they claimed and she is
suffering from a pretty nasty case of kennel cough
which is why she was rejected by the broker. She
is also quite a bit underweight weighing only 2 lbs.

Katie has been immediately placed on antibiotics
and will go to the vet to be checked for possible
parasites.

Katie should not have been removed from her
mother and littermates at this young of an age but
money is the bottom line for these people and if
they can ship them off to the petstores earlier they
can get the mother ready to breed again quicker.

Luckily for Katie she has ended up with our best
foster parents and she will be taken care of well
while she grows up. She is very playful and quickly
claimed a little tiny stuffed bear as her own and
carries it around in her mouth and shakes it just
like the little terrier girl she is.

These pictures were taken the first night she came
into rescue, you can see he poor little stuffed,
runny nose from the kennel cough. We will
periodically update her pictures as she grows over
the next couple of months so check back to watch
her grow up!

Katie is currently located in Lenexa, KS

APRIL 2004 UPDATE

Katie is still ill but we can certainly say this little
girl is a fighter! Unfortunately her kennel cough
has progressed into pneumonia and she is still a
sick little girl. She has been to three different vets
now and  through several different antibiotics and
although they kick it back a bit it alwsays seems to
come back.

She has recently had cultures taken that we are
hopeful will finally tell us exactly what antibiotic
and treatment are needed for this little angel.

As you can imagine, a lenghty illness such as this
is very expensive. To date we have spent very
close to $1000 on this little girl but as long as she
keeps fighting we will keep  fighting for her as
well. Katie could certainly use your support both
with your good thoughts and prayers and with you
Angel Donations.

We at S'Wheat Rescues, her foster parents and
most certainly little Katie herself, thank you for all
the support we have received for her so far.

These new pictures were taken of Katie in mid
March at the
Wheaten Meetin.

4/18/04 UPDATE

We have both good and bad news about our
S'Wheat Katie.

We finally know exactly what is wrong with her and
how to treat it. Our wonderful vet Topaz and
another vet friend of hers made a special trip out
to see Katie and took swabs of her lungs to be
cultured and tested to find out what was going on
with her.

We got the startling results late last week, Katie
has E Coli bacterin in her lungs. It is EXTREMELY
rare for this to be in her lungs but it comes from
the extremely filthy living conditions in the
puppymill she originally came from. E Coli is very
antibiotic resistant which explains why all the
different antibiotics she has been on have not
been successful in curing her.

While it is very good news that we now know the
enemy we are fighting, the bad news is that the
only antibiotic that will fight the E Coli is Baytril.
Baytril can have some bad side effects in a
growing puppy. It will sometimes cause joint
problems which we of course would hate to have
happen. But, this is the only drug that will work and
without it she will eventually dies so we don't have
any choice but to take the chance and hope for the
best. We will also put her on a drug called
Cholodin Flex that will hopefully help to protect
her joints.

Once again we will ask for your good thoughts and
prayers for this special little puppy. Katie is
obviously a fighter with a very strong will to live.
By all rights she should not have lived with this
bacteria as tiny as she was when she first came
into rescue. We all need to keep pulling for her to
fight this last battle and hopefully come out the
other sidee and happy, healthy and srong Wheaten
girl with a long life ahead of her.

UPDATE - MAY 20, 2004

I am extremely pleased to announce that Katie has
completed the antibiotics and is now free of the
pneumonia! And better yet, she has shown
absolutely no signs of having any effects from the
Baytril. She is now growing, literally, like a weed
and catching up to the size and weight she should
be for her age. We are allowing her some time to
build up her immune system again and grow a bit
but plan to have her in to the vets in June to be
spayed. After that has been accomplished we will
begin looking for a forever home for her, she will
most likely be ready to go home by the end of June.

THANK YOU to everyone who prayed for and
donated for this little girl, it is only with the help of
supporters like you that we can save the special
little ones like Katie who are so sick but deserve
every chance they can get!
