AFTER SURGERY
ZIGGY

Ziggy is 2 year old purebred male Soft
Coated Wheaten Terrier.

He was dumped in an animal shelter in
Indiana - this is what the shelter had to say
about him:

I'm a owner surrendered dog who was
neglected. My former owners bought me in
a petstore. Then they got a divorce and I
was left in a pen to live in my own feces
where I was thrown some food every day. I
was a matted mess when I got here. I am
blind in my left eye and have an injury to my
right rear paw after busting loose from my
pen once and being hit by a car. I am very
sweet and walk well on a leash. I was seen
by a vet on May 21st. The vet prescribed a
high-powered antibiotic ointment for my
eye. I was previously never seen by a vet.
He says I will require some surgery for my
cornea so infection won't set in or I might
lose my eye.

With the help of a rescuer in Indiana we
were able to get Ziggy to Missouri this
weekend where he can get the veterinary
care he needs.

As you can see in the pictures, his eye is in
bad shape. The blue/grey area you see is
actually the iris that should be brown in
color. The round black area is a hole is his
eye that the eye underneath is bulging
through. We will see if the eyesight is
restorable or not when he is seen by our
veterinarian. He seems to see some
shadow and movement at this time. At the
very least we will have the injury repaired
so he will hopefully not loose the entire
eye.

We have not seen him having any apparent
trouble with his leg but will have the vet
take a look at it to see if it needs any
attention as well.

Ziggy will also be neutered while the vet is
treating his other injuries.

Ziggy is up to date on shots and is located
in Kansas City, MO

We will update his site after he has been
seen by the vet and we get a prognosis.

June 4 Update

Ziggy saw the vet today and unfortunately
the news about his eye is not good. The
vets examined him and his eye is not
fixable. The injury has been let go too long
and the eye is not stable, the slightest
bump and the vets say the eye will rupture.

We obviously do not want that to happen
so poor Ziggy will have surgery on
Wednesday to remove the eye. They will
also neuter him while he is under sedation.

Please keep Ziggy in your thoughts as he
goes through this. We will update the site
after the surgery has been completed.

June 6 Update

Ziggy had his surgery today and came
through it well. The vet said the eye was
very unstable and ruptured during the
surgery so it was good that we were able to
remove it before that happened in a
unsterile environment. It would have been
very painful and traumatic for poor Ziggy
had that happened.

The vets also x-rayed his leg and chest
prior to the surgery to make sure he did
not have any hidden injuries from being hit
by a car prior to coming into rescue but did
not find anything.

He was neutered while he was under
anesthesia. Barring any complications, he
should be released from the vet on June 7.

We will update again after he is back.

Thanks to everyone who has donated to
his care. We rely on the generosity of the
Wheaten lovers out there in order to be
able to help dogs like Ziggy who require
expensive procedures to get them healthy
and ready for forever homes.

June 9 Update

Ziggy is home and doing very well. He is in
great spirits and running and jumping
around even as we try to keep him quiet
for a few days. It is obvious by how upbeat
his personality has become that he was in a
lot of pain from the injured eye.

The eye is quite swollen right now, looks
like he has a golfball there but it is getting
better. His sutures are absorbable so they
won't have to be removed but he will go
back to the vet next week for a checkup.

When the eye is completely healed and his
fall has grown back in, you won't even be
able to tell he is missing an eye.

Thanks again to all the wonderful people
whose donations have helped Ziggy

June 14 Update

Ziggy has done incredibly well. The
swelling in his eye is totally gone as is all
the discharge and the site is completely
healed. He loves to have you rub that side
of his face, now that it is not painful
anymore you can see just how relieved he
is to have the pain gone.

As you can see in the new pics, his face
looks great and when his fall grows back in
you won't be able to tell the eye is missing.
